Lungpacer Medical, which received FDA Premarket Approval for its AeroPace System, focuses on helping mechanically ventilated patients regain independent breathing by addressing diaphragm weakness caused by prolonged ventilator use. The system uses electrical stimulation to strengthen the diaphragm muscle through repetitive contractions, acting as a “personal trainer” to accelerate weaning from ventilators. Clinical studies demonstrated improved weaning success rates, reduced ventilator days, and lower reintubation risks compared to standard care, particularly for adults aged 18+ on mechanical ventilation for ≥96 hours who have not yet weaned. The device is contraindicated for patients with implanted cardiac devices or electronics nearby. As the first FDA-approved therapy of its kind, Lungpacer aims to mitigate complications like muscle atrophy and cognitive injury linked to long-term ventilator dependence while promoting natural breathing.
